Wool rugs are an amazing product. They are sturdy and visually appealing to the eye. Let’s look at how often you should be cleaning them and why they need to be professionally deep cleaned.
To understand the nature of wool, you need to visualize each strand of the wool fiber. Wool has scales on it. Think of them like half open upside-down umbrellas. So, when dirt gets into the carpet, these scales capture and trap the dirt into them. That is what make wool fantastic for hiding dirt. However, its downside is that even with regular vacuuming that dirt will not come out of the scales until it is flushed out with a through deep cleaning.
You may thing think your rug isn’t that dirty, but maybe just looking duller or time worn. Once the dirt is flushed out of the scales, it helps bring the shine back to the rug. Just look at this picture. It is a prime example of what a good cleaning can door for a simply gorgeous wool rug.
Another reason to have your rug professionally deep cleaned is the dirt itself. You may not realize it, but dirt is like little tiny shards of glass with sharp edges that can could potentially cut or rip the wool fibers. That can lead to permanent damage to your beautiful wool rug.
You should be vacuuming your rug generally once a week, depending on your traffic level. Generally, we do recommend that about once a month you flip the rug over and gently vacuuming the back of the rug to help loosen soil and get more contaminates out. Then flip the rug back to its normal position and vacuum the top. This applies to rugs with no rubber backing. If it is rubber backed, do not vacuum the back.
Professionally deep cleaning your rug should be done every 1-3 years. Again, this depends on the level of traffic in your home. Because your rug is like a filter, it will pull particles out of the air and right into your rug. Even if you are a low traffic home, every 3 years is a good rule of thumb.
