Stains… The Part Of Life We Like To Ignore, But Shouldn’t

Stains are an unfortunate part of life that we’d all like to ignore. However, we say don’t ignore them! They are not always a cause for alarm. Let’s deal with them right away, so they are not a major issue later.

Our four-legged pets are a big part of our family. Part of pet life is that there will enviably be accidents, either from a new puppy, an elderly dog or simply a sick dog, it is something that happens in life. We are here to help. If you do not combat the stains as they occur and they build up, it can cause some serious damage down the road.

Here are a few critical do’s and don’ts when it comes to stains.

Do not panic and take a deep breath.

What people tend to do is get upset and start scrubbing at the stain with a host of ill-suited cleaners, homemade internet “cleaners and fixes”. All off which, can either ruin or even set the stain permanently.

Blot, do not scrub. 

When you scrub frantically at the stain, you are going to ruin the fibers. If you were to take a single fiber of rug yarn and rub it vigorously you would see that it would separate and look incredibly frizzy. This is permanent damage to your rug fibers and cannot be undone. Take a clean white terry cloth towel and blot, blot, blot! We say to only use a white towel to prevent dye transfer from the towel to your rug, causing further potential damage.

Be careful with cleaners.

As previously mentioned, many over the counter cleaners are chemicals that are harmful your family. Have you ever noticed that a lot of them say to use gloves, do not let it touch your skin and to use in a well-ventilated area? Can that be really safe for your loved ones?

Also, did you know a lot of over the counter cleaners will actually set the stain into your carpet? Or it could simply shove the stain deeper into the backing of the rug, so it isn’t visible, but it will still be there and potentially smell bad and/or wick back to the surface.

Don’t mask it.

When you use that shinny over the counter products that swear, they will eliminate odors or pour your favorite air freshener on it, you risk potential permanent damage. You cannot pour an odor remover on a stain and expect it to magically disappear. Many of them have oils in them which will stain the fiber even more. You may need a urine treatment or urine flush depending on the situation.

When in doubt, call us!

If you let urine (and other stains) build up, it cannot only affect your air quality of your home it can actually ruin the carpet all together. It can get to the base of your fibers, the backing and ruin the carpet from the bottom up.
